BC Redress Negotiation and Settlement
Dissatisfaction with the British Columbia (BC) government’s 2012 apology—which lacked meaningful consultation, financial compensation, or acknowledgment of state culpability—led the National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC) to pursue a comprehensive redress package. Following extensive nationwide community consultations and formal negotiations, Premier John Horgan announced a historic $100 million redress settlement on May 21, 2022, officially acknowledging the provincial government's active role in the wartime dispossession, internment, and uprooting of Japanese Canadians.
The Japanese Canadian Legacies Society (JCLS) was established to transparently manage and implement the framework across six legacy pillars:
-
Seniors’ Health & Wellness: The top priority, delivering direct healthcare and wellness grants to over 5,000 living survivors worldwide.
-
Education: Funding mandatory K–12 curriculum updates, educator resources, and the JapaneseCanadianHistory.com digital hub.
-
Heritage Preservation: Restoring over 36 historic sites and supporting major museums.
-
Monument: Erecting a 300-foot granite wall in Victoria inscribed with roughly 25,000 names.
-
Community & Culture: Revitalizing cultural infrastructure and funding 241 intergenerational family healing projects.
-
Anti-Racism: Utilizing historical lessons to dismantle systemic discrimination.
This settlement ensures direct care for aging survivors, promotes cultural resurgence, and establishes enduring educational tools to combat systemic racism.
